Description
(EQUINOX, the times of year which day and night are equal in length. An equinox occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator. This happens twice a year. The spring or vernal equinox falls around March 21, when the sun moves into the northern hemisphere of the sky. The autumnal equinox occurs around September 21 as the sun moves into the southern celestial hemisphere.)
In this painting, the constellations and the daytime landscape are of equal length with the rose representing the vernal equinox and the snow representing the autumnal equinox. As in all of Ricardo's works, the numbers three and seven are evident in objects and triangular compositions. The number three represents three stages with each stage containing three representatives. The first stage is death ‑ represented by the skull, the shells, and the devil's claw; the second stage is dormancy ‑ represented by the seeds of the corn, the chili, and the winter landscape; the third stage is life ‑ represented by the rose, the dripping dew from the rose, and the hummingbird. The old boards in which all of this lay, represent a doorway that separates the visible and the invisible, the tangible and intangible. Since these three stages are visible and tangible to the human mind, they lay on the visible side of the boards (doorway). Three planets symbolize the Trinity with the key representing faith. The key is the link between the perceivable and the imperceptible, for without it, we cannot pass through the doorway into the next existence. All of this supports the rose that represents life. In the opinion of the artist, life and death are of equal value as day and night are of equal length in the equinox. Without death, there is no life and sometimes life emerges from death, therefore they are equal. "Equinoctial Rose" symbolizes the equinox of life and death. It is then left up to us to use the key which unlocks the door from this existence to a much higher plane.
